Jessica Hengen approaches ceramic with a combination of fearlessness born of her love for clay and the demanding precision of a master jeweler; the result is striking, beautiful, sometimes disturbing but always moving. Her store in Sugar Loaf is a trove of amazing figures, faces, barnacles, bowls, sparkling jewels and precious metals. A masterful collection, well worth a special visit!

KIND WORDS

Jessica is incredibly gifted. I love her pieces, pottery and jewelry alike. I have commissioned a few pieces, and am always amazed at how she can surpass my expectations every time! I love to visit her shop and see what she is working on, and where her creativity is taking her. Such an honor to wear her work.

I absolutely love my J.Hengen coffee mugs! I added another to my small collection of 5 today. I’m sure I’ll be expanding into her other artistic creations.

THE GALLERY

As a maker, I work primarily in clay and metal. Both materials come from the earth and are transformed by fire.  Some of the same stones I set in jewelry I use as fine ground powder in glazes. For me, there is something incredible and romantic about the idea of turning rocks and dirt into something beautiful that lasts forever. I find the skills I need for each medium complement each other.

THE SHOP

As a maker, I work primarily in clay and metal.  Both materials come from the earth and are transformed by fire.  Some of the same stones I set in jewelry I use as fine ground powder in glazes.I am attracted to surfaces that hold stories and lean towards using natural materials like raw minerals and old mined diamonds.  My work is consciously created using conflict free gems and recycled materials.
